SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 10

Ross, Sprouse, Walker and Tomblin, Mr. President)
Congratulating the West Virginia State College Basketball Team for
winning the 1947-48 Colored Intercollegiate Athletic
Association Tournament.
Whereas, The 1947-48 West Virginia State College Basketball
Team, coached by Mark Cardwell, was undefeated in 30 games and won
the CIAA national tournament by defeating Howard University in the
title game played in Washington, D.C.; and
Whereas, Members of the 1947-48 Basketball Team went on to
excel in their fields of endeavor, such as coaching, education,
business and professional sports; and
Whereas, One of the team members, Earl Lloyd, became the first
African-American to play in the National Basketball Association and
also the first African-American to coach in the NBA; and
Whereas, The team members present here today, Frank Enty, Joe
Gilliam, Clayton Rockhold, Bob Wilson and Earl Lloyd, along with
Betty Cardwell, the daughter of Coach Cardwell, have gathered on
the campus of West Virginia State College to celebrate their
fiftieth anniversary reunion; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby recognizes the outstanding athletic ability of the members of the 1947-48 West Virginia State College
Bbasketball Team which won them the national championship; and, be
it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward
a copy of this resolution to the 1947-48 West Virginia State
College Bbasketball Tteam.
